Dentures (False Teeth or Plates):

 

Dentures (also known as plates, or false teeth) are a common method to replace lost or missing teeth, particularly when there are multiple missing teeth. They can improve appearance & function, allowing people to restore their smile & regain lost chewing ability. Dentures may be 'Full' or 'Partial'.

 

Full Dentures:

A full denture replaces ALL the teeth on the upper or lower jaw. This type of denture is shaped to fit the gums of your upper or lower jaw and can also provide support to the facial structure, allowing your lips & cheecks to look fuller

 

Partial Dentures:

A partial denture replaces SOME, not all, of the teeth on the upper or lower jaw. This type of denture is usually retained by clasps which hold onto some of the remaining teeth. They can be made of either resin (plastic) or metal-&-resin. Your dentist will discuss which material is best suited for your personal situation.

 

For some patients, particularly with full lower dentures, an implant-stabilised denture may be a preferred option - this gives the denture anchorage to the bone, increasing stability & improving functionality. For more information, please see our page on Dental Implants.
