Extractions:
In modern dentistry, teeth are extraced less frequently than in the past, however there are times when extraction is still the best treatment option.
Teeth may have to be removed for several reasons:
-
Extensive damage (due to decay or trauma) rendering the tooth irrepairable
-
Periodontal disease
-
Cracks or fractures, particularly of the root
-
Lack of function
-
Prevention of complications
-
Improve appearance as part of orthodontic treatment (braces)
Dental extractions vary in the ease & complexity of removal. Simple extraction is attempted whenever possible, but sometimes a surgical extraction may be required (particularly for wisdom teeth). Particularly complex cases may be referred to an oral/maxillofacial surgeon.
